Mr Hudson - O2 Academy Oxford

Yesterday I travelled up to Oxford to check out Mr Hudson on tour. I had seen him at The Scala back in March which left me wanting to see more. The venue in Oxford was quite an intimate one, making the performance that little bit more special

I got to say, Mr H didn't disappoint, his band and the brilliant Joy Joseph are tight, the sound was incredible.

The gig saw performances of some new material set to be featured on 'Straight No Chaser' which is due to drop August 3rd.

With over half a million downloads of his So Far Gone Mixtape I think its safe to say that Drake has got a big fan base, it seems that this isnt just exclusive to you and I but some of the biggest RnB & Hip Hop Artists are feeling him too.

The 6emeia project

Today I had a bit of time to catch up on a few blogs that I read & 2 or 3 of them all featured the 6emeia project. After seeing a few snaps I had to do a bit of digging and I have to say I really like their work, not only is it simple but extremely eye catching.

To give you a bit of info on what 6emeia is all about I took this from their website;

The 6emeia project was created and developed by the artists Anderson Augusto, also known as SÃO, and Leonardo Delafuente, also known as Delafuente. The duo live in the Barra Funda neighborhood of São Paulo where they began the project with the purpose of changing and transforming daily life.

The duo's objective is to modify the means within which we all live, proposing a new way to view things by reflecting upon themes generated through creative and unusual works. Such modifications are made by painting storm drains, light posts, manhole covers and any other object which makes up the urban scenario.

With the painted storm drains, a new type of communication is proposed between art and the city as well as between art and the residents. Art then becomes within the reach and at the service of everyone. By looking with care at the most forgotten and indifferent objects, one can take in art in a new way. The painted storm drains are like colorful drops falling into animmense ash-colored canvass.

Today the artwork for the much anticipated album release from Maxwell hit the internets along with a track listing.

After doing a bit more research it seems this album is part of a 3 album project with the 2nd and 3rd album supposidely dropping in quick succession. There was a playback of the album this week at Sony BMG over in Kensington and from what I have read from the people who listened we can really look forward to the album being classic maxwell.

There are strong rumours that Maxwell will be touring Europe October/November time. Exciting stuff!

Downtime

As you may or may not know the blog was down for a few days, a couple of people hit me up on twitter and I recieved a couple of emails asking me what had happend.

The blogs address was supposed change seamlessly as of sunday but when the change happend everything dissapeared. Still trying to sort it out it out but I have fixed the problem for now, thanks for those who asked what happend!

A couple of days back I was just checking my twitter feed and I stumbled across someone posting about a dude called Maestro. I clicked on the link and it took me to Maestroknows.com

The star of the video is Levi Maestro and below he gives us a description of what to expect.

Maestro Knows is an online show based around Levi Maestro’s day to day life. Taking place primarily in Los Angeles, Maestro shows you LA through his eyes. Still living in sunny Los Angeles, CA and still learning, working, & creating. Maestro has directed and produced content for several corporate brands and music artists, building relationships one day at a time. Now in 2009, Maestro sets out to showcase his working experiences and relationships with other creatives through his online show entitled Maestro Knows. “You gotta work hard and do for yourself, cause nobody else is gonna do what you want for you”.

Now you may be thinking whats so special about that, well your gonna have to watch to fully understand, its nothing ground breaking, and I mean that it the best possible way, the fact that its just a guy and his friends hanging out and having fun is what makes it so good. For me its almost an aspirational lifestyle, hanging with your friends, living in a cool city, knowing the hot spots and just having fun.

So far there have been episodes, I suggest you go watch them all. Here's one to give you a taste..

Mr Hudson last night gave us the first play of his debut single off his second album 'straight no chaser' on MistaJams 1xtra show. This version differs to the one he performed at his scala show as it now includes the KanYe Vocals. Im really feeling this one, production sounds tidy and its nice little taster of what to expect of the rest of the album which drops on August 3rd.

Next up is Dennis Ferrer and his track - How Do I let Go. As far as I know this an old track, you may not be familiar with Dennis, he is most famous for the smash remix of fish go deep - the cure and the cause and to be honest im only just discovering his music.

I think I first heard How Do I let go on 1xtra but never caught who it was by and then a friend asked me if I had heard it this week and here we are, check it out, let me know what you think.

I came across Ians work over at ATCN (there blog is definately worth checking on the regs) and was blown away by his artwork.

On his website he says; Playfulness is important to me; I’m motivated by trying to push my work somewhere new. Somewhere else. Really, I’m interested in what could be. I sometimes reach that point by making mistakes and generally misusing technology and I often arrive at solutions by accident. I prefer to let the materials I use influence the outcome. I especially enjoy making portraits and I’m excited by the process of collaboration. I love conversation. I’m obsessed by music. I’m looking forward to what happens next.

Asher Roth @ Notting Hills Tabernacle

Last night I went to check Asher Roth in Notting Hill. I liked the album but at the same time wasnt really sure what to expect from the live show. I was very impressed after watching though, he rattled through most of the album with a lot of energy and kept it all very fun throughout, it was a big show.

Nice to also see someone perform somewhere different. I had never heard of The Tabernacle before last night, seriously nice little venue. Its all about getting a cab there tho, TRUST ME, try and walk and you will get lost.

Highlight of the night for me was the Roth Boys freestyle. Shout out to Semtex for his set before Asher came on and for the snaps.

Maxwell - Pretty Wings

Maxwell has been missing in action for a number of years now, there have been numerous murmerings of a new album or single only for it not to happen. Its been frustrating for us fans because you know when he does deliver an album its going to be a really solid piece of music, not the diluted work of someone who releases an album every 6 months!

So yesterday, Columbia records gave us the first single off Maxwells 'Blacksummers'night' which is set for release on July 7th of this year. In a recent interview Maxwell said of the his latest single, "Pretty Wings"

It’s about the last relationship I had," "How you meet the person of your dreams but at the wrong time ... the song is a testament to what I wanted to say and say, to her."

I love this track and I love the video. Obviously very different to most videos that we see on the internet or on MTV now (anyone actually still watch MTV?). Not something that could be knocked up in an 18 hour on set shoot, this video obviously took weeks to make. Simple but very effective and something that lends itself very well to the track its for.

Shifty is a film set to be released tomorrow here in the UK. Filmed in 18 days and funded for only 100k, looks like its gonna be a big film, its definitely good to see some more quality work coming from our shores. Sadly cause of the budget you wont find it every cinema nationwide but if you hit the official website and enter your postcode it will tell you the closest cinema to you showing it.

Riz Ahmed (Britz, Dead Set) takes the title role of Shifty, a thriller charting an action packed 24 hours in the life of a young crack cocaine dealer on the outskirts of London. The sudden return home of his best friend sets in motion a chain of events that see Shiftys life quickly spiral out of control. Stalked by a customer desperate to score at all costs, and with his family about to turn their back on him for good, Shifty must out-run and out-smart a rival drug dealer intent on setting him up. As his long time friend Chris, played by Daniel Mays (The Bank Job, Plus One), confronts the dark past he left behind him, Shifty is forced to face up to the violent future he's heading fast towards.

Drake - Best I Ever Had

Those of you that read regularly know I think been bumpin Drakes 'So Far Gone' Mixtape for the past two months now and that I regard it as one of the best bodies of music in my collection. The buzz when his tape dropped was crazy, the only way I could measure it was by seeing how many times the tape was downloaded and it was tens of thousands.

The performance below is insane. You may watch it and think whats that special, you would be wrong to think theres nothing different about this performance. When you go to see live music you expect to hear people singing along, its normal. Normal for someone who has released an album that you can buy in stores maybe, but for someone who has simple released a mixtape, for EVERYONE in the crowd to know every word? Crazy.

Dizzee Rascal - Bonkers

The man is all about consistency. Since he stepped on the scene with his debut album 'boy in da corner' Dizzee has been dropping hit after hit. His latest effort a collaboration with Armand Van Helden is no different.

This track has been been getting a lot of airtime since its radio debut earlier in the week and I think commercially its gonna do big things.

La Roux - In For The Kill - Skreams lets get gravey remix

La Roux translates to red haired one. Similar to her striking looks Elly Jackson has produced something that is really different and fresh. In for the Kill was released on March 22nd and finished a more than respectable 11th in the UK Singles chart. I definately feel that La Roux will be doing big things in 09.

Big Sean is an emcee signed to KanYe Wests G.O.O.D Music label. I realised despite having quite a bit of his music thats been leaked on the net over the past few months, I hadnt actually taken the time to post it up and fill you in.

Big Sean hails from Detroit and met KanYe after hearing that he would be appearing at a radio station back in 05. Upon hearing Ye was gonna be there, he made his way over to the station where he freestyled and handed over a mixtape. The freestyle and the mixtape were dope and Ye ended up signing him.

Big Seans debut album 'finally famous' is set for release in 2009 and below I have uploaded a couple of tracks of his for you to get a taster.. Enjoy

Mr Hudson @ The Scala London

After much anticipation the day had finally arrived of the Mr Hudson gig at The Scala in London. Its a one of the few venues in London that I hadn't visited before. Its a small intimate setting which allows for quite a personal show in the sense that your very close to the stage and wherever your watching from you have a great view.

Supporting was Melanie Fiona and I got to say she tore it down. Really really impressive performance, her vocals were amazing. She performed her current single "give it to me right" along with some more of her new material and ended her support with a cover of Ye's 'Heartless'

Mr Hudson hit the stage and straight away hit us with a new track which is gonna be featured on his up and coming album straight no chaser.

What a way to start the show, an amazing new track. From there on in he switched it up a little and gave us a couple of tracks of his Debut 'A Tale Of Two cities' before giving us some more new music

If you see tickets available for any of his remaining shows you need to go, you really wont be disappointed. Hopefully the footage I took will give you a sufficient taster.

After the show we hit the after party at The Double club and the good music continued. After speaking to Ben (Mr Hudson) briefly I can say that he is a genuinely nice guy which combined with the music he is producing is gonna see him go very far.

I'm still on a hype one from the show and now I have finished this, its time for me to go and check if I can secure some more tickets for any of the other rearranged shows.

(P.S Quality of the footage isnt that great as I had to record from my phone rather than the camcorder I ordered that didnt arrive despite me paying extra for it to be delivered in time.)

SXSW. I hadnt heard of it until a few days ago when twitter and the music blogs started to get a little crazy in anticipation of it beginning. For those of you who like me had little or no knowledge of SXSW let me break it down for you.

Its one of the biggest music festivals in the US. It first began back in 87. A huge amount of artists congregate their and perform in a number of different venues over 4 days.

So you may be thinking, okay, music festival, sounds pretty normal. To a degree it is until you read some of the amazing artists that were set to perform in 2009, people like ; Asher Roth, Blaqstarr, Charles Hamilton, Kid Cudi, Solange, Mr Hudson, KanYe West, Consequence to name a few.

I was most excited to see KanYe Wests G.O.O.D Music showcase. He brought along the whole G.O.O.D music family; Mr Hudson, GLC, Tony Williams, Kid Cudi, Big Sean and Consequence. If that wasnt good enough, Common & Erikah Badu also stepped on stage.

The Uk's finest DJ Semtex was present and blessed us with footage and pictures. Shout out to semtex, he seems to be everywhere and on anything hot right now. Its a big look.

Mr Hudson - More Footage - Tour News

Ping. An email arrives in my inbox about the Mr Hudson tour. I saw on a twitter update from him a while back that the tour was going to be rescheduled. I was gutted, I had seen a lot of chat on the net about his callaborations with Estelle, Asher Roth and KanYe and was excited to hear the new material he had cooked up.

The twitter update said the tour was being rescheduled due to him over running with the album. You cant really complain, its gonna be a special body of music and you want it to be as good as it can be.

Right, now fast forward to tonight, the email arrives and happy days. The only date of the tour that hasnt been rescheduled is the night that im attending at The Scala on March 24th. Get in.

If anyones going or thinking about getting what tickets are left for the remaining rescheduled dates (which are now in May btw) heres some more footage of the man himself performing live at Proud back in December.

So, Mr Jackson announced a come back tour this week for ten dates playing at the O2 Arena in London in July.

Im not gonna lie im hyped. Like everyone else, I have registered for the opportunity to get the tickets when they go on presale and I am keeping my fingers crossed that im lucky enough to be one of the few that get tickets.

Its wiered though, with MJ I think people are in one of two camps. 1, Michael Jackson is a musical superstar, you got the back catalogue, you feel the dance moves and you feel a little bit sorry for his fall from grace or 2, you hate the guy, think he's wiered, question the outcome of his court case etc...

Alot of friends I have spoken to since the announcement have fallen into the second category which I was surprised at. On the whole though, the majority are with me and sit nicely in category 1.

Dont get me wrong though, Im not one of the grown men acting like small girls shouting and screaming at the announcement of the tour!

Im a bit concerned it could be a bit of an anti climax but I dont want to not go and then possibly miss out on an incredible show. Maybe Im getting ahead of myself, I am yet to secure tickets so we will have to wait and see.

I'll let you know how I get on, wish me luck!

So I came across Mike Posner after seeing the video of him on youtube creating his beat for his track Halo which is a remake of a beyonce single. After watching I was really quite excited to find out more about him, his work and a bit of history.

This was taken straight from his myspace;

I really feel that their style is something a bit different and something that will definately see them reap the reward of commercial success and aclaim soon.

On Feb 28th VH1 aired the latest edition of their show storytellers over in the United States. For those of you unfamiliar with the show, think MTV unplugged, think small intimate gig.

The show see's KanYe perform songs from his latest album 808's and Heartbreaks along with tracks from his previous albums. He also speaks very openly about what inspired the songs and where he gets his inspiration from.

Robyn is a singer/songwriter from Sweden. When you begin to read this you may be thinking who are you on about but if I were to mention her biggest hit "With Every Heartbeat" you will probably know exactly who I'm talking about. If not, Click the link!

I'm not gonna lie, I cant shout out that I have been a fan from the beginning or that I can list every song from her catalogue, I only really took notice after hearing "with every heartbeat". After hearing it I decided the album was worth a listen and promptly after hearing it I went and got a copy.

Her self entitled album which featured "With every heartbeat" was released way back in 2005 on her own label Konichiwa records. It only really got commercial acclaim in the UK when "With every heartbeat" was released as a single and went straight in at number one.

The albums got a real funk about it, I can only describe it as it as some electro funkyness. You need it in your collection.

Favourite track? Not sure there is one, the albums pretty solid but if I was really pushed and had to single one out 'anytime you like' purely for the spacey type feel to it. (Yes I created the word Spacey)

Sometimes you come accross someone in life, a friend or a friend of a friend, or maybe someone you meet whilst shopping, a cashier or anyone but they have something really special about them. They have an amazing smile thats infectious and they just ooze passion and happiness and you cant help but let it rub off on you.

Well Nikki Jean is one of those people. You may not recognise the name but you will in time. She is a singer/songwriter who's most famous callabo of late was on Lupe Fiasco's track Hip Hop Saved My Life. She has just started a road trip where she will be driving all over the US to write and co write her album, she wont be returning home until its complete. Cool concept huh?

So, on saturday it was my birthday and I thought that I would buy myself a little gift to celebrate. I hadnt seen these headphones before stumbling across them in a store with a demo set in a mall. I put them on and instantly I was in love.

I spend an hour a day walking to and from work listening to music and generally have something playing in my office at work and when I get home so I knew these would be a good investment.

The sound is incredible, crisp clear and full of base. If you like music and listen to alot of it then these headphones are for you, if you like your ear drums, then maybe consider something else!

So tired!

Last night was terrible, I didn't get any shut eye till 4:30am and was up again at 6. I tried everything, watched a film, sent a few emails, played some chilled music. None of it worked.

Today has been a long day and although I'm tired now I don't feel like I could go to sleep if I wanted. I'm hoping I crash out later.

So,

It happens again. It began with myspace, moved on to facebook and now its Twitters turn to occupy my time.

I deactivated my facebook account about 7 months ago now. Knowing too much and people knowing too much about them/me kind of got a bit much for me. Also found myself spending waaaaay to much time on there.

So Twitter is next, it seems its something thats really taken off in the US but not something that people have really picked up on here yet. Its similar to FB in the sense that its based around status updates.

I like it. You follow people and have people follow you. You update your Twitter with what your doing/thinking etc, people comment and you comment back, Simple huh?

Im listening to the album for the first time right now. I thought it wasnt released till tomorrow but its available on itunes right this second.

Not sure how this will read or if its of any use but i thought I would give you my track by track run down as I listen..

1. Say you Will - As ever, the production is good, its meaty, I love the layers and the fact that after 3 mins when the vocals are finished the track continues for a further 3 minutes. The final 3 minutes the track really breathes and you can enjoy the hard work thats gone into the production.

2. Welcome to Heartbreak (feat Kid Cudi) - Not quite the normal KanYe but more of the lyrical KanYe, More spitting than singing but hold up the singing returns later in the track. Kid Cudi on the chorus, you could say lyrically his input isnt that great but it sits well in the track and according to interviews KanYe says he had a big part to play in the production in this track. Two tracks in and im feeling a lot more comfortable with the whole singing vocoder combination. I like the message in this track, "My friend shows me a picture of his kids, all I could show him was pictures of my cribs. My friend says his daughter got a brand new report card, and all i got was a brand new sports car"

3. Heartless - Ok, so this track has been floating around for a minute now. Again, Ye singing on the chorus but on the whole we have the KanYe spitting as we are used to. Got to say again, the beats are big. My Subs bumpin right now and I wonder how long it will be before I get a knock on my door complaining.

4. Amazing (feat Young Jeezy) - Another track that has been leaked for a while now but one I havent downloaded until purchasing the album today. Im excited to see how this track comes out as 'Put On' was my jam. (Ye & Jeezy's most recent callabo). Jeezy steals the show on this one, although his verse is short the track builds nicely to it and I feel it was needed to make it sound complete.

5. Love Lockdown - I know the door is gonna get to knocking soon, the beat on this pumps. By now I imagine most people will be familiar with this one, I like the openness, its easy to get caught up in the beat, but the lyrics on this one are what really makes the track. Wow, The beat really switches up at the end of the track and sounds different to the previously released versions oh and along came the knock on the door requesting a lower volume...

6. Paranoid (Feat Mr. Hudson) - Feels like something out of the 80's/early 90's, like some throwback beat and the chorus. Really upbeat and more of a party jam, plus despite the vocoder its more of the college dropout Ye, feeling this one in the big way. 2 minutess in and its time to reload. "Baybeeeeeey, dont worrry about it, baybeeeeey dont even think about it, you worry about the wrong thing, you worry about the wrong thing, the wrong thing" . FEEEEEELING THIS! It conjures up images of shell suits/Gold Chains/Poppin and Lockin and Boom boxes. Definitely my favorite track so far.

7. Robocop - Begins real grimey and kinda dirty, the beat is disgusting. I like. Again, another happier and fun song. I don't know quite how to explain it but all of these songs, particularly this one is really full. There's so much going on, its like making your favorite sandwich with loads of different fillings. You got the bread, you spread the butter, hit it with the ham, you might add some cheese, then some salad, then a bit off pickle and then to set it off you add the mayo. Its just right, each ingredient really makes the song, the sandwich without the cheese wouldn't taste the same. I dunno where the fuck i'm going with this but it feels and tastes right. I like this track a lot. (I played this 3 times before moving on to the next track)

8. Street Lights - I like it. "Do I still got time to grow, things aint always set in stone" Its hard to pay attention to the lyrics when your in another world feeling the track and the beat but you need to pay attention on this one. I have said it about other tracks but I like the openness, I like the "life aint fair, I know my destination but im not there". We all go through shit that isnt too great, but you will get to where you want to go in the end.

9. Bad News - its funny, You read and listen and you build your expectations of something. I was thinking to myself, I will buy the album but im not sure im really feeling this style. Having listened to 9 tracks so far, its like I havent heard the college drop out or any of Ye's other albums. Its like he has created his own Genre, big powerful beats and heart felt lyrics.

10. See you in my nightmares (feat Lil Wayne) - I have been waiting for this. Two of the sickest Mc's collaborating again. "Okaaaay im back up on my grinnnd, you do you and im gon do miiine, you do you cause im gon be jus fine" (Side note, how true. Stop watching and start doing, anyway, back to the review). Got to say im feeling these dudes being a bit more real. The talk on this track is about a relationship, everyones the same and encounters the same shit.

11. Coldest Winter - "Good bye my friend, I will never love again" . Says it all for me. I love this track and I think you will find it hard to find someone who doesnt identify with the lyrics, be them feeling about someone who they loved or a friend or family member. Powerful lyrics.

12. Pinocchio Story (freestyle from singapore) - All about how celebrity changes your life, the fact that you begin to doubt yourself, your decisions and actions.. the want for a normal lifestyle and the stresses that celebrity puts on you and your life.

Wow. Not what i was expecting at all. Its not like I was expecting a bad album but boy, I just didnt feel like I would be feeling the album in this way after one listen. Another really solid album, too many times you buy an album and you end up feeling 30/40% of the track, not today. As I have repeated through out, I love the work thats gone into the album, the production is rediculous, lets just say the sandwich is stacked ha!

My one word of advice? Listen LOUD and enjoy!
